What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding After Taking Contraceptive Pill?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 May 2014
Question: Hi Doctor, I had romance with my girl friend where in i put my fingers into her vagina. Later we realized that there could be precum on my fingers so she thought of having contraceptive pill (idoz) immediately on 2nd Apr (with a 4hrs delay). The menstrual cycle was due in next week (could be between 4th Apr to 10th Apr). Since after a day she is having continuous unexpected bleeding which is not similar like menstrual cycle (thick like liquid and not continous. only once or twice a day) and is continuing since 10 days. Please suggest what to do? How can it be controlled to normal? What could be reason for this?

Brief Answer: Side effect of idoz Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic. It seems like a side effect of the emergency contraceptive that was taken. It is known to cause menstrual irregularities. Other possibilities are incomplete abortion and infection. I would also suggest you to go for ultrasound pelvis to rule out incomplete abortion. If the above mentioned causes have been ruled out, she can be given medicines to control the bleeding. These medicines are prescription medicines and need to be taken under medical supervision. Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further. Dr Vaishalee

Thank you Doctor. Just today i checked with my girl friend and she is saying she got her periods today (as expected or normal bleeding). 1.Do we still need to guess on any of the infection or incomplete abortion as she had period started today? 2. Even if in case & Just for safety purpose, can there be any medication or general precautions to check on infection? 3. Any guideline to use contraceptive pills? Please suggest on these which will be very helpfull.

Brief Answer: Check for infection with pap smear Detailed Answer: Hi 1.Do we still need to guess on any of the infection or incomplete abortion as she had period started today? In case of normal periods, incomplete abortion is ruled out. You can get infection ruled out by getting pap smear done. It is done by taking a swab from the cervix and checking under microscope. 2. Even if in case & Just for safety purpose, can there be any medication or general precautions to check on infection? Yes she can go for pap smear and urinalysis 3. Any guideline to use contraceptive pills? An emergency pill is taken within 72 hrs of sexual intercourse. Use of emergency contraceptive pill is better limited to once a month to have less side effects. Though more than once can be taken. Using oral contraceptives gives better protection. Hope it helps.
