Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: A couple of hours ago, My vision becam significantly impaired. I was seeing bright lights in the center of my field of vision, as if I had looked directly at the sun. This lasted for about ½ an hour. I had a bit of dizziness along with this. The condition has now gone away. I am kind of nauseous now, vague pain in my head. Was I having a migraine, or is this something I should be concerned about?

Possibility of migraine with aura or transient ischaemic attacks

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The symptoms seems to be migraine attacks with visual aura.
Other possibility may be transient ischaemic attacks.
Is there any previous history of similar migraine headache?
Is there any cardiac illness, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia?
You should take pain killers. Rest and sleep helps in aborting the attacks.

I've never had a migraine like this before. I have high blood pressure.

How can I rule out transient ischaemic attack as the situation?

Did my follow-up question go through? How can I rule out TIA?

Brief Answer:
Get examined and evaluated by a neurologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Transient ischaemic attacks are diagnosed based on history and associated risk factors for such a condition.
You can get eye examination for fundus visualization.
Brain imaging should be done in case of associated risk factors of stroke like diabetes, hypertension, previous TIA or stroke, cardiac illness.
Single episode of headache with preceding visual aura may be due to migraine too.
Get examined by a neurologist for further work up.
