What Causes Inflammatory Swollen Glands Of Eyelids In Infants?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: My 6 month old baby started with what looked like an allergy...red under his eyes...this turned large puss filled bumps under his right lid and a large puss filled bump on top of his left lid. We did a round of anti biotics and eurythromicin on his eyes. the puss drained but the lower lids looks red and another bump is forming on the lower lid. He has a total of three bumps now. I feel there is an underlying cause....perhaps an allergy? The eye doctor said it was chalazion but the pictures that I see online do not have the redness under the eyes that he has. We have tried hot compress but nothing seems to work. Could this be something else? This all happened after he received 4 vaccines within one months times.
This has gone on for a month...starts off looking very red then swollen bumps form. He has a total of three "chalazions" now...this seems very strange to me and I am concerned any other ways or tests he should be taking?

Brief Answer:
The photos show hordeolum and chalazion of eyelids.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history and the photos attached with the question.
These photos show inflammatory swellings of the glands of the eyelids in the form of hordeolum. The hordeolum will present with redness of the skin with pus filled bump pointing towards the conjunctiva or skin. These can become chalazion after 3-4 weeks and chalazion will not have redness like hordeolum.

Hence your baby is having hordeolum and chalazion of the eyelids.
The treatment of this condition is by the use of antibiotic eye drops or eye ointment with hot compression.

Multiple hordeolum or chalazion are usually seen in children following fever or any other condition which decreases immunity. Hordeolum and chalazion are not related to allergy.
Hence I advice you not to worry as this a infection of the eyelids and this will decrease with treatment.
You need to use multivitamin supplements to increase general immunity along with specific treatment of hordeolums by the use of antibiotic eye drops.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

He never had a fever but he did have a runny nose for at least a month...could this be related to what is going on in his eyes now? I'm breastfeeding him...would a dose of breast milk in the eyes help speed up the recovery?

Brief Answer:
Breast milk application to the eye is not known to help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Running nose being a part of respiratory tract infection can be associated with eye condition with both arising from same source of infection. But these are not directly related to each other.
Breast milk applied to the eye will not help in this condition.

The treatment of this condition is mainly by the use of antibiotic eye drops or eye ointments. I usually prefer to use broad spectrum antibiotics like Moxifloxacin eye drops or eye ointment.

Since there are multiple swellings involving the glands of the eyelids a course of oral antibiotic drugs as per the advice of your pediatric/child specialist will be helpful.
Along with this treatment a course of multivitamin drops or syrup will be helpful to prevent recurrences.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Brief Answer:
multivitamin pills aren't probiiotic.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up.

Probiotic aren't multivitamin pills. Probiotics are usually commensal organisms which are sometimes prescribed along with an antibiotic to prevent pseudomembranous colitis.
You can discuss about locally available multivitamin pills which are diet supplement.
