What Causes Inter Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Sep 2014
Question: Hi. I'm a 41 yr. old women with 3 children and I am experiencing bleeding 16 days after my last period started. I just got over a bout of gastroenteritis about a week ago (not sure if it was food poisoning or stomach flu). I have regular pap smears which have been normal for the past 15yrs or so. I also had an endometrial biopsy in Feb of 2013 for some spotting which came back normal. I have been under a lot of physical & emotional stress lately and I suffer from anxiety which is not helping my situation. The spotting started yesterday after I had diarrhea after eating a big meal (stomach probably not back to normal). I wore a pad all day today with minimal bleeding on it by the end of the day. I called my gyno and she said if it doesn't go away in a week she'll do a biopsy. I'm very worried about cancer.

Brief Answer:
CANCER SEEMS LEAST LIKELY

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
IF it does not go away in a week, you should have an internal exam, a repeat Pap smear, a pelvic sonogram and a biopsy IF indicated.
At 41, mild spotting is nothing to get so worried about.
There are so many factors that could have led to the spotting - anxiety, your recent sickness, stress, seasonal changes.
At 41 anyway, hormonal flucutations are common as peri menopause approaches.
In the workup, get your hormones too checked - thyroid hormone levels in particular.
None of your symptoms fits in with cancer, please do not worry.
Have an assessment since that will assuage your anxiety.
All the best
