Question: I am a 23 year old single female. I have my periods usually within a gap of 32-33 days. Now it's more than 36 days, but the periods hasn't started yet. I am experiencing severe mood swings, headache and leg pain. Is there any problem? Should I take any medication? Why is this happening?

Brief Answer:
A number of causes can delay periods

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. The first thing that I would insist is not to panic. Periods can be delayed for a number of reasons. However, before anything, I would need to ask you whether you have been sexually active within the last cycle. If not, you need not worry. But if you have been sexually active and have had unprotected sex within your fertile period (10th to 18th day of your cycle) you need to go for a urine pregnancy test to be sure. If you did not have unprotected sex within the fertile period, you need not worry.

I would not insist you to take medicines right now. Let us find the cause first. Treatment will ensue accordingly.

Sir thanks for the answer,

No, I am not into any physical relation till now. The only change in my routine, I have been going through a period of emotional stress. No intimate relationship with anyone.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to PCOD

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster.

Since you are not into active sexual relationship, a significant portion of the probabilities get ruled out.

PCOD is a very common cause of delay or irregularity in periods. Wait for a week and if you still do not get your periods, get a lower abdominal ultrasound done.

Stress is an important trigger for PCOD too.

Do get back to me in case of any further queries.

Sir,

Should I take Memprate tablet, since it cause withdrawal bleeding? Is there any side-effects for it? And is there any medicine for the severe mood swings?

Brief Answer:
Wait

Detailed Answer:
Meprate is a synthetic progestogen used to induce withdrawal bleeding. That may give you your periods but will not help in detection or solution of the underlying cause. I would not suggest intake of the medicine. Rather wait and then get the ultrasound done.

The mood swings are due to fluctuations in the estrogen levels. The underlying condition needs detection first. Low dose estrogen pills should provide relief.
