What Causes Large Painful Blister On Hand While Suffering From Strep Throat?
Question: I went to the doctor today for a weird blister that is on my hand (on the top of my hand below my pinkie finger). She cultured it and I'm waiting to hear back. Problem is it is still getting bigger and more painful. I'm starting to wonder if I should go to the ER. I have NO IDEA what it is. I had strep throat 3 weeks ago, took penicillin, got a mild yeast infection. Treated myself with Monistat 1 then took 1 day Diflucan. A week later I got a paronychia on my other hand near my finger nail (first time ever). It just started as a weird blister. I popped it and now I have dead and peeling skin, and still some tenderness there. This new blister is kind of the same thing but in a different spot and on the other hand. It is becoming more painful and I'm wondering if I should go to the ER. Doc thought it could be viral (herpes maybe?) or an allegic reaction. I'm taking antivirals but they do not seem to be helping at all. I'm worried because pain is increasing (the blister started to develop Wednesday afternoon and is still getting worse). Let me know if that is possible and what you think it could be, also if I should go to ER.

Welcome at HCM.....
I have gone through your query and being your physician I completely understand your health concerns.
I have seen the picture and it appear to be a viral infection. In my opinion , you should visit the ER if the pain is not responding to the painkillers which you have taken. You have to wait till the reports of the culture available. Definitive treatment can only be initiated after the report availability.
Meanwhile stay calm and use acetaminophen to relieve pain
Get well soon
Hope your query is adequately addressed if you still have any feel free to ask

Does it look like herpes virus or could it be a different virus? If different, do you have any ideas which one?
I took ibuprofen and i popped the blister and bandaged it with antibiotic ointment and pain was relieved. I think it needed to drain, it was pushing against the healthy skin and that was causing the pain.

I appreciate your follow up.
Nope , it does not look like HERPES VIRUS INFECTION. It appear most likely to be BLISTERING SKIN DISEASE. One can only be sure after culture report is available . Do maintain a proper follow up with your dermatologist so that it can be properly dealt. Sometimes these blisters do develop in autoimmune diseases too.
Try to keep the affected area clean and free of contamination. you can use painkillers along with it
Hope it helps
