What Causes Low T3 And T4 Levels?
Question: Hi, I am a 35 year old woman feeling like I've been suffering from low thyroid over the past year as I excerise daily and eat clean and light with a background in fitness but gaining weight and lethargic etc. I got blood test back that read: T3 = 2.20 (healthy range 2.30-4.20), T4 = .084 (healthy range .89-1.79) and TSH 1.5. My doc said I'm fine but I really don't think that should be accurate consodering with both t3 and t4 are lower than healthy range and me gaining weight, brittle hair and nails etc. Also note my RBC and HBG are both lower than range and my iron was very low which I'm now taking a strong supplement. Plasma was fine and B12 was 2-3x normals so ok there. Thoughts on why my doc didn't put me on any thyroid meds? Instead she suggested weight loss pills. Crazy, considering I weighed in at 144 and am 5'9. THANK YOU in advance :)
Brief Answer:
Free levels of thyroid hormones should be checked.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking!
The levels or T3 and T4 are low, but before starting to investigate further i would recommend to check the Ft3 and Ft4 levels.
If they also persist to be low than a secondary hypothyroidism ( from pituitary causes) should be taken in consideration.
Please specify your symptoms ( except the concern for weight gain) and attach the results of the examinations you have done.
It will be a pleasure to help you further.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
