What Causes Lump On Calf Area After Walking For A While?
I have started walking/jogging for last 10 days and every time I tried to walk fast or run, say > 5 KM speed, In few moments, I notice a small lump on the outer side of my leg little below the calf muscle (see attached images).
Impact because of this: It pains on both legs and I have to reduce the speed otherwise there is no other problem.
The lump is not solid, feels like watery substance and the not clearing out.
--This has been noticed when I have attempted walking/ jogging earlier as well
May be Varicose vein
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, an elucidate history and clear pictures (images).
To recapitulate: Male / 38 - lump as described - on fast waking or jogging - feels like a watery substance - also in past - pains on both legs - have to reduce the speed ...
The most probable cause of this lump is a dilated vein, what we call as a varicose vein.
The impure blood from the leg is pushes up by the muscle pump of calf muscles. When the calf muscles are working its pumping action on the deep veins of the leg push up the blood.
The system of the veins under the skin (superficial) is connected to the deep veins by the communicating veins which have non-return valve. During muscular contraction these valves do not allow the blood to come back to the superficial system.
If the valve become incompetent, the blood comes back to the superficial system to give the problem as you have.
I would advise you the following:
-Get the venous color doppler examination done of both the lower limbs to confirm the diagnosis, to find which valves are incompetent and get a plan for correction of the defect.
- Get a Clinical examination done by a General Surgeon or a Vascular Surgeon, discuss about the diagnosis and investigations and plan for treatment.
You are giving the history of the pains in both the legs. Varicose veins can be a reason. Other reason like Sciatica should be ruled out beforehand.
I hope this answer helps you to get a correct diagnosis, investigations and plan further treatment.
Please feel to discuss, ask further relevant question if you need to or if you feel that there is a gap-of-communication.
Is it likely to be serious, if I let this be the way it is?
Do not stop walking - apply crepe
Detailed Answer:
No need to stop walking.
You can use 6 inches Crepe Bandage to support the foot and leg and you can walk.
Most important is the early and correct diagnosis.
If you let this the way it is can certainly cause problems.
There are complication and one of them may be the leg pains you are already getting.
As for the Venous Color Doppler of both the lower limbs.
Detailed Answer:
Cost of diagnosis :
Depends upon the country you are living in. (not mentioned by you / please tell me). In XXXXXXX it is about Rs.6,000/-
Main cost is venous color doppler by ultrasonography machine of both the lower limbs.
You may please inquire with the Family Doctor or the Radiologist nearby.
