What Causes Movable Lump In Left Side Of Collar Bone?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Jul 2014
Question: There is a movable lump in the hollow of my collarbone extending out an inch or so in each direction. It does not hurt. It protrudes about 1/4 inch from my collarbone and is becoming more noticeable to me. You may say to see a doctor but I don't feel my general practitioner is the right kind of doc for this. Who should I see?

Brief Answer:
Enlarged lymph node.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This lump is for 99% enlarged lymph node. If this lymph node is on the left side, it is called Virchow's node. Presence of such node can indicate head or neck area cancer (like throat cancer, larynx cancer - both are possible if you smoke) or other cancer like stomach cancer.
I do not say that you have a cancer (cancer lymph node is usually not movable). But I want you to do not ignore it and do not wait with it. Cancer needs to be ruled out.
I suggest you to consult hematologist. Before this consult, ultrasound of this area should be done. Biopsy of it might be necessary.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you. I will follow your recommendation but wonder if you understand that this selling XXXXXXX in the CENTER, not the left side. I have never smoked. However, whenever I laugh berry hard I instantly develop a very deep cough which sounds like I am quite ill.

With this in mind... I will have an ultrasound, but is it still your recommendation that I take those results to a hematologist, or to some other kind of specialist?

Brief Answer:
.

Detailed Answer:
If it is in the middle, it can be also a thyroid. Ultrasound should be done for sure. Depending of its result you should choose a specialist (lymph nodes - hematologist, enlarged thyroid - endocrinologist).
