What Causes Muscle And Joint Pains All Over Body?
Question: Hello Dr. Grief-
My sister has terrible muscle, joint pain all over. Can hardly walk, arms and shoulders hurt, and sometime she complains that her hands are swollen. She states that her throat feels sore, and feels that her neck even seems swollen at times. She has missed a week and a half of work so far, and had a lymes blood test done that came back negative. I asked her if she remembers if she had any bites (spider, bug) recently and she did say a few weeks ago she was bit by "something" and put some cortisone cream on the bite. I would appreciate any feedback that you can give.....she took 6 days of predisone and has taken the last pill today. She is no better! She is also taking pain medication.

She is 59 yrs old and otherwise healthy. She does have primary biliary cirrhosis-1 pill/day....She always has a liver bx done each year for this and ultrasounds, blood work. All come back good.

As per your history symptoms due to insect bite should resolve now as you have taken prednisone also.
Possibility of polyarthritis needs to be considered in your case.
Rheumatoid arthritis may involve small joints and early morning stiffness in joints, do you have such complain?
Reactive arthritis can also present in such manner.
When such patients come to our hospital I advise them blood test like RA factor, ACCP, ESR, complete blood count, HLA B27.
So I will advise to consult specialist doctor and do required investigation for inability to walk and swollen hand.
Consider her liver profile before taking any medication.
