What Causes Nausea And Pain Centered In The Abdominal Region?

Question: I am a male, nearly 52 yrs of age with a reasonable level of fitness. For about a month now I have been experiencing nausea and pain centred about the upper middle abdominal region 2 or 3 inches below the sternum. I have not vomited but have felt close to it. I have no weight loss and am eating ok even though I often feel I do so to take my mind of the discomfort rather than hunger. My bowels have been reasonably normal for me, if anything a little slower than usual. I have bouts of IBS but not with the discomfort I am experiencing now - more lower stomach pain with more wind and urgency rather than the general feeling of un-wellness and discomfort. I have intramedullary NF3 localised around the lumbar spinal chord but my last surgery was some 14 years ago. I am monitored for a slow growing irregularity about L3 but at last scan 18 months ago it was only at around 3mm and not expected to cause any problems. I also have multiple abdominal lipomas of varying size but have had these since puberty. I also have a large hemangioma of the liver but again not of concern. I have had prior colonoscopy's and gastroscopy's the last being 5 years ago following a family history of Bowel Cancer, with some polyps removed and one adenoma. I have occasional rectal bleeding but usually associated with haemorrhoids and had one episode of Kidney stones over 10 yrs ago. I also have treated long standing clinical depression but have never been hospitalised. My main concern is as a result of losing a first cousin 12 months ago to Oesophageal Cancer following similar short term symptoms. Any advice appreciated.

Brief Answer: Answer given below Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for posting your query. I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you. The region where you feel the pain is where the stomach, pancreas and liver are located. So any issues with these three can cause pain in that region. Of these peptic ulcer disease ( involvement of the stomach is very common than the other two). Since it is more than 5 years since you had a gastroscopy, I advise you to get another one done now. To rule out liver and pancreas issues an ultrasound scan of the abdomen may be done. Meanwhile you can take omeprazole for relief of pain. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr.R.K.

Thanks for that - That's exactly what I am getting done next week. It's a little bit scary given my cousin only lasted 3 months with his cancer of the lower esophagus. Also my father died in his late 50's of bowel cancer. It is always good to get a second opinion. I have been prescribed those capsules but am still feeling a bit nauseous? I guess I need to be less nervous as it could be anything. Thanks XXXXX

Brief Answer: Answer given below Detailed Answer: Hi, The nausea could be due to anxiety. If it is very troublesome you can take anxiolytic medications. Antiemetic medications like zofran would also be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr.R.K
