What Causes Pain In The Center Of Abdomen And Diarrhea After Eating?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: I have dull pain in the center of my abdomen for two weeks. I have confirmed gallstones through an ultrasound, but my follow up appointment isn't for another week. I also have a history of cdiff and peptic ulcers. I have diareahha after I eat anything and dull pain in the center of my abdomen, two inches above my belly button for at least an hour after eating. Should I go to the ER or wait for my follow up appointment? Do you think this is something more then gallstone related?

Brief Answer:
Need to have more details...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and am sorry for the situation you are in.

You are saying that you have a dull pain int he center of your abdomen for 2 weeks while gallstones were confirmed by ultrasound. Here, I need to have more details:
- has your doctor reviewed the ultrasound report?
- did he asked to start any treatment?
- did he/she recommended to consult with surgeon to discuss for surgery?

Next, you are also mentioning to have a history of c.diff and peptic ulcers. Now, I need to know if you are currently having such problems at the moment or it was a few years back?

I need to also know if you have been on any treatment recently? If no treatment, with such clinical presentation, I'd advise to run to ER as you need to further evaluate your medical status and start treatment as soon as possible.

Looking forward to have the requested data in!

Thank you for your response. To answer you questions:
1) I had the ultrasound this past Thursday. My follow up doc appointment with my GI doc isn't for another 10 days so no, I haven't discussed any treatment options with my doctor yet and haven't yet consulted with a surgeon.
2) I had cdiff 3 years ago. I don't think it's cdiff related. I haven't been on antibiotics for over 3 years and I'm not showing cdiff symptoms.
3) the pain I feel immediately after eating does feel similar to peptic ulcers. However it does go away when I take anacids. The pain is located in the same area though right above my belly button and below my sturnom.

Since I sent my initial inquiry the pain has lessened slightly however I still feel it after I eat. I then have diareahha in the hours following a meal and can literally feel food moving through my body. I have been trying to avoid all fatty foods. I also forgot to mention I'm 4 months post partum.

So my question now A) if this is gallbladder related, what can I do to ease immediate pain? B) should I seek immediate medical attention (ER) if the pain continues? C) could it be something aside from gallbladder given my medical history with stomach issues? D) how long can I wait to seek medical attention given the dull burning constant pain after I eat?

I want to avoid the ER and surgery if possible. Thank you

I meant to say the pain doesNOT go away after taking antacids. I also feel a pressing need to go to the bath room and have been very gassy.

One more question, would I have this sudden onset of pain with gallstones? The ultrasound tech said she didn't see signs that I passed a stone nor was it lodged anywhere. So why would the stone be giving me this type of pain that set in so quickly (within the past two weeks with no prior symptoms)? One other piece of info, last Tuesday, three days after I felt the initial pain, I was in so much pain I threw up but then felt a little better. Could I have passed a stone then but they couldn't see it on my ultrasound?

Brief Answer:
Acute gastroenteritis...or stomach hyperacidity...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

Your symptoms are not indicative for gallbladder issues, but they seem to be related to an acute gastroenteritis or due to hyperacidity of the stomach.

I advise to consult with GI specialist as soon as possible as further evaluations are needed. Meanwhile, you can start taking :
- antispasmodics to relieve the pain
- continue taking PPIs to ease the acidity issues

With regards to going to ER, it all depends on :
- the severity of the symptoms
- if they won't improve after above-mentioned advice

Wish fast recovery!
