Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: Checking for my 17 yr old granddaughter who has hip, knee and ankle pain a lot. Tylenol helps. She doesn't get much exercise as she lays in bed watching tv, texting, etc. This has been going on for a long time. We used to say it was growing pains. She also has stomach aches a lot and recently was hospitalized as she got dehydrated after throwing up after having wisdom teeth extracted. She is going to be a XXXXXXX in HS and want a good healthy year. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Polyarthritis. Needs evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

It is possible that your granddaughter could be having arthritis of the joints. Common causes at her age include Rheumatoid arthritis and Seronegative spondarthropathy.

It is better to get her examined by a Rheumatologist to rule them out. Instead of Tylenol, you could try Tablet Ibuprofen 200mg twice a day for 7 days after meals and Tablet Rabeprazole 20mg twice a day for 7 days before meals. This will have better anti inflammatory effect.

She needs blood tests like compete blood count, Rheumatoid factor, CRP, ESR, ALSO.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

She has been diagnosed with mild scoliosis, would this be a reason for hip, knee and ankle pain? Should she see Rheumatologist?

Regarding her upset stomach pain, to what degree does the ADHD med factor in with this?

Detailed Answer:
The pain is less likely due to mild scoliosis.

It is best she sees a Rheumatologist.

ADDRESS medication can rarely cause polyarthritis.

Will have her checked by Rheumatologist for her joint pain.

Still questioning her upset stomach problems which she has very frequently.

Could that be caused by the ADHD meds: Focalin and Clonidine?

Thank you, Dr. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Could be Irritable bowel syndrome. Stomach upset possible but non specific

Detailed Answer:
She could be having Irritable bowel syndrome, which is common in persons suffering from ADHD. A Gastroenterologist consult will help.

The medication you mentioned can definitely cause gastritis and stomach upset but this can occur with any other medication as well and isn't specific.
