What Causes Palpitations And Breathing Difficulty?
Question: I've been having a strange feeling in my chest when I lie on my left side. It feels like I can't breathe and when I ignore it my heart starts palpitating somewhat violently. I've found that this happens more often after a big meal or after drinking lots of water.
I weight 175 lbs and excersize regularly. I drink a moderate amount of coffee and chew nicotine gum.
Any ideas about what is going on?

Brief Answer:
Palpitations are benign...
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for posting!
I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns.
In the most common cases palpitations are common and occur in people with healthy heart. However, in some rare cases it can suggest different diseases.
But in this case I think that palpitations are not suggesting any disease, because caffeine, nicotine and big meals are factors that aggravate heart palpitations.
To be sure for the diagnosis you need ECG(electrocardiogram), Holter Monitor(24h) and a glucose test.
You should also contact a cardiologist for an evaluation of your health condition.
Ask me for anything unclear.
Wish you good health.

I thought maybe the vein that supplies blood to my heart might be getting pinched. Could this be the case?
Brief Answer:
Pinched veins don't cause palpitations...
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for writing back.
Pinched veins don't cause palpitations.
As I said to you above, I think that in your case palpitations are caused by caffeine and nicotine.
But another possibility is that you suffer from Mitral valve prolaps. To rule out this possibility an ultrasound is necessary.
If you don't need any further clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
