What Causes Persistent Swelling In The Leg While Treating Varicose Veins?

Question: I am taking Xarelto, 15 mg daily, as prescribed by a cardialisist for treatment of a dimer test indicating blood clots. I also have a lower right leg that has been described as varicose vein problems causing the leg to swell as compared to the left leg. After 2 months on xarelto the swelling on the lower right leg has not decreased. I am fearful that I don't see xarelto advertised any more. I am on 15 mg because I only have one kidney remaining. At times I am a bit depressed over this situation.

I read your query and understood your concerns.

Since the D-dimmer was elevated and you have signs of deep vein trombosis you should be put on xarelto for at least 6 months.

Moreover you have a single kidney and due to functional kidney failure which is typical for your age you should continue with xarelto 15 mg.

If you were my patient I would recommend to do a Doppler examinations of both legs to confirm the diagnosis of deep vein trombosis.
