What Causes Poor Weight Gain In A Toddler?

Question: my 2 year old kid not gaining weight.
Brief Answer:
details required.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, I'am Dr Suresh K Yadav MD (paediatrics), I had gone through your question and understand your concerns,
Causes of poor weight gain are many , most common being inadequate diet. You have not mentioned weight of your child, his or her birth weight, height , any history of chr or recurrent illness .
If everything is normal you need to give him or her a balanced diet , if despite it , not gaining appropriate weight , he or she needs to be evaluated for cause of poor weight gain .
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions

hi. dr. thanks for the reply. my kid is 2.5 year old and she is 12.3 kg. I have another query. I am suspecting she has worms in stomach. not sure what should I do? I had given her mebex dose before 2 months. can u suggest what step I should take?
Brief Answer:
Weight of your baby is normal .
Detailed Answer:
Hi ,
For a 2.5 yr child (girl) 12.3 kg is nearly 40th percentile as per WHO growth charts . So taking a single value your baby weight is normal, what is more important is growth over a period , she is expected to gain 2-3 kg over next one year and that is normal , more important is activity of child , is child is active playful , you need not worry .
Normally you need to rule out anaemia , if haemoglobin level is low she may need iron supplementation and diet rich in iron like green leafy vegetables , 2nd thing if she mainly remains indoor having less sun exposure , she may need vitamin D supplementation or sun exposure . Regarding worms , deworming can be done every 3- 6 months if chances of exposure are there by using suspension albendazole 10 ml as a single dose at night . You can discuss this with your doctor. Stools examination for worms can also be done.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions
