What Causes Prolonged Bleeding Postpartum?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Should not be bleeding for so long.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
The usual period of postpartum discharge is around 4-6 weeks. The duration of flow is more when there are associated factors like a big baby, multiple pregnancy, instrumental delivery, infections of the uterus and retained products.
Apart from these, hormonal imbalances post-delivery, especially when you are lactating, also cause such prolonged bleeding. Weight changes during and after pregnancy also contribute to this effect.
I would ask you to see your consultant for a proper clinical appraisal. You would need a trans-vaginal/pelvic sonogram to look for any retained products of conception, ovarian cysts and other situations. Urinalysis and blood counts are to be done. A swab test of the vagina and cervix may also be done if inspection reveals infection.
Once the investigations are done, it is easy to treat the condition as per the results. Nutritional supplements are given and hormones may be given if needed.
Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.
regards,
Shanti.V.

Hormone effect and delayed involution are likely.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing back.
Since you are a multipara, your uterus will be of larger size and hence takes more time for involution. Moreover, since you took the depo shot soon after delivery, hormonal cause also is a possibility. Properly performed cesarean section with no postoperative incidents does not cause excess bleeding.
In the current scenario, the cause of your prolonged bleeding seems to be due to hormonal effect as well as an enlarged uterus owing to several pregnancies. Please ask your specialist for a complete evaluation and plan further management accordingly.
Hope you find this information useful. Please get back if you need any more help.
regards,
Shanti.V.
