Brief Answer:
Spine MRI should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Your symptoms are most likely caused by spine issue. Buttocks is where the nerve is present. This nerve starts in the lower spine and goes down to the lower limb.
Any compression of this nerve (in the spine area or pelvis area) can cause symptoms described by you. Additionally you may have burning like feeling in the leg. The pain can get worse after physical activity and become less intense after hot bath.

To diagnose the problem, you should consult orthopedist. Spine MRI is the test which can tell where is the problem.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

With physical activity like jog or running it doesn't actually get worse. Pain in buttocks more when sitting, upper glutes area or side of buttocks mainly. Tylenol or ibuprofen helps or a hot bath. Just didn't know why the last 2-3 weeks buttocks area hurting, with no strain or other issue arising. Pain had occurred in crevice of thigh and groin area a few months back for a few weeks, but no pain recently, so didn't know if this pain was connected or happened because of previous pain in thigh/groin area.

Brief Answer:
Piriformis syndrome can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Generally, this makes the compression in the pelvis area more possible than just a spine issue. Piriformis syndrome (piriformis is a muscle in the pelvis) is a common condition which can act like that. This muscle can compress the sciatic nerve right in the pelvis. And sitting for a long time can be the reason.

Pelvis MRI can diagnose it. But before that, orthopedist should perform physical examination.
