What Causes Redness Around Eyes After Getting Scarlet Fever?
Question: My 2 1/2 year old has had possible scarlet fever (the urgent care doctor didn't do any tests), this was about a month ago, she was given antibiotic for 10 days, however for over a month now even after treatment she has has redness around her eyes that seems to go hand in hand with her not feeling up to par. When the redness is worse she is tired and just looks and acts as if she doesn't feel well. On and off throughout this month she had had fevers. She has had this last fever for four days. Averaging between 100.5 and right now at 102. They are telling me that it is just allergies. Could allergies cause fevers? And do you think this is an accurate diagnosis?

Hello. Thank you for your question. I am not convinced that the scarlet fever episode of 1 month ago is necessarily related to the month long issue. I believe what we are dealing with is the symptoms of seasonal allergies that have not been appropriately treated. Often, in allergy, when symptoms linger they can a tract infection. Awesome these infections are viral and resolve on their own. This would account for the on and off fever that she has been experiencing.however, sometimes these infections can be bacterial, like a sinus infection. These infections often require antibiotic in order to resolve. This could account for the 102 fever she is experiencing now. I suggest that if we better treat the seasonal allergy we will be able to prevent the recurrent infection. I see that you have tried claritin. You can try zyrtec. If this doesn't work, I recommend consulting with your doctor to discuss prescription strength antihistamines. With better allergy treatment, we have a better chance at preventing infection.
