What Causes Sensation Of A Lump In Throat, Abdominal Bloating And Heartburn?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 May 2016
Question: Hello. I am 24 years old. I have been having my mouth (hard palate) covered in coarse substance every morning for the past 2.5 years. When saliva starts producing, the substance dissolves in the saliva and produces a very bitter/acidic taste. Upon spitting saliva out it can be seen of dark yellow color. The disgusting taste makes me wash my mouth with hot water in mornings and spit it out (cold water doesnt do the trick). Throughout the day i often get a light burning at the lower throat, light enough to be ignored. I do not smoke, drink alcohol, take any drugs. I only drink water. The diet is not great though. I do very little exercise. All symptoms appeared after experiencing a high amount of stress for a few months;
For a few months throughout this 2.5 year period I would also have another type of disgusting taste in my mouth, with no or little acidity or bitterness (hard to identify), making me want to spit out saliva rather than swallow it, but this lasted during the times when my diet would be extremely bad (lack of meat and vegetables, eating mostly oats and buckwheat)

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for assisting me with this issue. Here are a few symptoms that I feel:

+Sensation of a lump at the back of your throat - i did not think of it as a lump, but after interpreting the feeling it as such, I could say lump, in addition to a light burning
+Abdominal bloating - quite regular, although I blame this due to my diet: high intake of muesli (oats, wheats, nuts and rasins) and sometimes high intake of beans

+/- Bitter taste ONLY in the morning, NOT due to the regurgitation, which I never experience

+/--- Heartburn - throughout these 2.5 years I believe i have experienced heartburn only ONCE. One occasion being as a result of eating very fatty meal, causing great discomfort. other than that I dont think I feel heartburn)

Looking forward to hearing from you

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for helping me. I have a few more questions.
1) Is it possible for this condition to go away or is it a permanent illness?
2) regarding your previously mentioned symptom " +Bitter taste in the mouth from regurgitation of food or liquid into your mouth" : is regurgitation of liquid felt physically ( the most extreme form of regurgitation I presume would be vomiting, where you physically feel the insides of the stomach coming out) or I can only be aware of it by the changed taste of my saliva.

Right now i am feeling a lump in my mouth and unpleasant taste in my mouth, but i do not feel any regurgitation - my thinking and worries are produced by my limited common sense, which says 2 things: maybe the bitter saliva is produced by my saliva glands due to some form of lack of minerals or vitamins, or maybe there are some toxins that my body gets rid of through lungs that causes my bitter taste?
General blood test was done 8 months ago indicating everything is fine.

Could you inform me more on regurgitation and is it still possible for anything else to exist other than GERD?

Looking forward to hearing from you

Brief Answer:
GERD is permanent unless well treated

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

1. In GERD, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which prevents the backflow of fluid or liquid from your stomach into the food pipe (esphagus) either weakens or does not function properly resulting in the reflux of food or liquid into the esophagus and even the mouth

This condition shall remain unless the esophagus is operated on, so it is a permanent condition sir.

2. So as you understood that vomiting is also regurgitation, the only difference is that when we vomit the amount of food or liquid that is regurgitated is quite large; whereas with GERD that amount is minimal and is mostly just liquid (mainly acid from the stomach)

This acid in the stomach is produced to aid with digestion and the breakdown of food. This acid is mostly regurgitated in individuals having GERD, and most times it can be felt (a small amount of liquid comes into the back of your mouth which tates bitter), but at times it may not be, but the taste will be felt in the mouth.

The bitter taste that you feel is purely due to the acid reflux and nothing else. The acid in your stomach is quite strong and is that way to aid with digestion, and only the inside of the stomach is made in a way to withstand that acid, when it comes into the mouth, in the longterm, it can result in weakness of the teeth and gums, and also discoloration of the teeth.

Hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you, please do not hesitate to write to me anytime.

Best wishes.
