What Causes Severe Cramps In The Muscles Around The Waist Line?
needs to get investigated
Detailed Answer:
Dear,
Welcome to HCM
As I can understand here your chief compliant is that of muscle cramps on the side of above the waist.
An elaboration of the complaint will be needed in respect to the following questions.
Considering your age, I am suspecting for back spine pathology, muscle sprain around abdomen, electrolyte problems.
My question for you:
1. Kindly describe 'muscle cramps', its nature like whether it is of dull ache, sharp shooting, fatigue, symmetrical?
2. Onset. if it is sudden in onset, only on movement of waist, more on bending, standing, precipitating factors? Relieved by doing what? relieved on rest, standing, siting?
3. duration. since how long it started. did It progressed or stable?
4. history of any pre-existing medical or surgical condition? any prior fall injury?
information regarding these will help me to have a better clinical picture.
Until then you can try over the counter medication like, ibuprofen can be taken as an when required, maximum twice a day, for pain.
Awaiting your reply...
Regards,
Dr Pankaj Borade
Thank you for your response. I actually have severe cramps in my whole body. I'm not sure it is because I cannot seem to exercise or if I have a vitamin deficiency. But the cramps are hard and extremely painful. I can feel the muscles moving around on my body. Yesterday, I had a bad stomach muscle cramp. It pulled so hard I thought I was going to go to the hospital. It was very hard and burning sensation. It took my breath away. That is the first time that has happened. But the rest of my body, i.e., legs, feet, arms, fingers, torso and neck straight to my head are extremely painful. I used to play keyboards and sing when I entertained. That was 10 years. Then I went to work for law firms and typed my brains out for 30 years. Now my fingers wrench up so tightly that the pain is extreme and I have to wear braces. Around 1998-1999 I had carple tunnel surgery. That was okay. Doctor did a fine job. But now the muscles and tendons are acting up. There is no way I can sleep.
I have a device in my spine to massage the nerves in my legs. I have not been able to charge it lately. I have a call in to the manufacture about it. Anyway, the muscles in my legs feel painful and heavy all the time. I had the heart institute check all my arteries, and everything always came out all right. I do have type Two Diabetes since 1997. It's basically under control most of the time. I'm not sure if it is causing the cramps. But seemingly, I cannot sleep when it all occurs because I cannot get in a position to sleep. Every position is detrimental to my pain.
It is very tiring putting up with all that pain every day. It is getting worse each day. I have not had a chance to visit my doctor yet on this, because I do have an appointment in March and this will be discussed then. But right now, I was wondering if you can tell me if I might have a vitamin deficiency or what you think is wrong with this picture.
Sorry this is so long, doctor. I do not know how else to tell you about it. I cannot exercise and I do sit in front of the computer just about all day.
Thank you.

neuropathy, needs further investigation
Detailed Answer:
dear,
thanks for the elaborate reply. Very informative indeed.
I can understand the distress you must be through.
Your complaints are more suggestive of a generalised neuropathy.
Vitamin B12 deficiency may present with similar picture.
The conditions such as diabetic neuropathy is likely, considering your diabetes condition it is very much advisable to check Levels of HB1AC and blood sugar levels.
Other conditions that can be thought of are auto immune demyelinating neuropathies, that may warrant muscular biopsies however a thorough neurological examination is required for this to decide.
I would want to know why a massage device been there in your spine? for what condition it has been fitted?
My suggestions are:
1) get a HB1AC levels, blood glucose levels, VIT B12 level done.
2) before you have your meeting with the treating doctor, for pain you may take over the counter medications like ibuprofen.
3) get a thyroid function test done,
welcome for further suggestions.
Regards.
