What Causes Small Growths At Vaginal Opening?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jun 2014
Question: Hi. I am on vacation and was drugged a couple of nights ago and I cant remember what happened, but now I have some kind of growth around my vaginal opening. I am so scared. I am 34 and have never had an std and always practiced safe sex, so I have no experience with this kind of thing. I hope you can help.
The bumps are not itchy painful and I don;'t have any discomfort.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Have you never noticed these growths before ?
These seem to be vaginal papillomatosis, small frond like growths which are quite normal and harmless.
They are easily confused with HPV ( human papilloma virus ) though which is a sexually transmitted infection.
It is less likely to be HPV as it rarely appears all of a sudden in 1 - 2 nights.
However, please consult a gynaecologist for biopsy of the lesions to confirm the diagnosis.
Take care, and do not worry.
I think they are innocuous and not HPV.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Oh, thank you so much. I was so scared I had herpes or something terrible. I have an appointment for a pap smear and std test when I get home on Thursday. Is there anything else I should do? I can't believe this happened to me. Thank you for your quick and kind response.

I have noticed growths like this before, but there seem to be more there today, which is why I was worried. The incident (if there was one) happened on Saturday night.

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.
And I have noticed today that I am having more vaginal discharge/odor than usual, but I am very dehydrated and tired from the sun and vacation, so I don't know if the bumps and the discharge are related.

Thank you for your appreciation.
It is definitely not herpes.
A Pap smear and STD screen should suffice.
Get the lesions biopsied to rule out HPV.
Am sure the growths are benign ones, they would have been there always, you just are anxious and freaked out so noticed them.
Yes, dehydration can precipitate a vaginal infection.
WHile you have an exam, get a vaginal swab and culture done to rule out any specific infection.
Have lots of water.
Avoid using soaps, creams, gels, douches .
Just clean copiously with lukewarm water.
Refrain from sex till your exam is done.
Take care.
