What Causes Sporadic Muscle Pain In The Leg?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: I have had sporadic muscle aches 3 times this year. It occurs in one leg, then the other. Arms, wrist, knees, even fingers. They last about a month & then go away. They just came back (3rd time this year). I have had blood work done twice & the test results have come back normal. Is this just something that can occur as you get older? (I just turned 39).

Brief Answer:
Depends on what tests.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Your symptoms do not seem limited to the muscles but to the joints as well since you mention fingers, wrists and knees. Such aches as you describe do raise some concern for rheumatological condition like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus etc which are chronic conditions. These conditions though in most cases do show some changes in laboratory tests. So if the appropriate tests have been done and resulted normal then it is reassuring.
But since you mention only blood work without specifying which tests it is hard to say. If you do not know the precise tests names you should ask your doctor if he has had tests to specifically search for these conditions, at least the most common ones such as inflammation indicators, rheumatoid factor and nuclear antibodies as well as creatinine kinase for muscle damage.

If they have indeed been done as I said it is reassuring and it may be a benign manifestation as your doctor says.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
