What Causes Swelling In The Penis And Abnormal Penile Discharge?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: Hi, my son's penis is swollen and there is discharge leaking from the tip. We tried taking him in to urgent care earlier today and they concluded that it was not an infection because it didn't look red enough and there was no discharge. Now it is more red and swollen and there is discharge. It is 6:30 pm here now, and all urgent care clinics in the area are closed. I am wondering if this warrants a trip to the ER, or if it can wait until tomorrow when he can be seen by his regular provider?

Brief Answer:
It's most likely due to infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. The symptoms are suggestive of bacterial infection of gland. You may start him on empirical antibiotics such as Amoxicillin or cefpodoxime along with ibuprofen for pain and inflammation refief. If pain doesn't improve with this then visit an ER for proper clinical evaluation, laboratory tests ( pus culture) and definitive treatment. If the symptoms improve then visit your regular provider for assessment and further management.

Hopefully it will be of help.
Take care
