Question: I am 59 year old male. I woke up this morning with the foreskin on my penis swollen. No pain, all else looks normal, just swollen foreskin. I have never had this symptom previously. I have some peripheral neuropathy in feet and hands. could this be some type of neuropathy.

Brief Answer:
It could be Paraphiomsis or Balano-posthitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Did the foreskin get retracted at night and remained in that position last night or during sleep? Do you have issues with retracting your foreskin earlier? If its a tight foreskin then there can be problems like Paraphimosis wherein the foreskin gets retracted and is unable to come back and keeps swelling up making it even more difficult for it to fall back in place. The treatment of Paraphiomosis would be getting it back in place with the help of a Surgeon or by a minor surgery where they will give a few incisions and get the fluid out so that it can normally fall into place.
If the foreskin is in its place covering the glans penis then it would be an infection called Balano-posthitis. This needs to be shown to your GP or a Surgeon and medicines would need to be started. It is common in Diabetic patients. Therefore, see your Doctor so that optimum treatment can be initiated. Without examining it would be very difficult to advice medicines or surgery depending upon the condition.
I would be more than happy to answer any further queries you might have about this issue.
Take care,

It is still swollen. no redness, no pain, no problem with urination. I see my GP next Thursday for a visit. It is OK to wait until next Thursday to discuss with him. He thinks I am pre diabetic and we are doing testing for that.

Definitely not a retraction problem. I am circumcised but still have some loose foreskin at the base of the penis glans.

If it is OK is there anything I can do in the meantime, such as ice compresses, or other.

Brief Answer:
It is not Paraphimosis then. Probably Balano-posthitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Good to hear from you.
As you are circumcised it cant be Paraphimosis then.
It would probably be Balano-posthitis then with or without Diabetes.
You should see your GP and probably start antibiotics for a week to 10 days.
You can apply warm compresses to ease the swelling not ice or cold water.
There is nothing to worry since its not Paraphimosis. It would probably be a low grade infection which can be managed well by your GP. Diabetes detection and treatment would be of utmost importance at the same time.
Do let me know if I can be of any further help.
Take care,
