What Causes Twisting Sensation In The Lower Left Abdomen?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Dec 2016
Question: I felt fine until midday yesterday when I went to sit up in bed and my left very lower side of my abdomen seemed to lock up and almost like a twisting sensation happened. I could not get up until I laid flat down on my back in bed. Then I got up and the whole rest of the day I could feel internal gurgling across the lower section of my abdomen horizontally across the bottom section. There has been constant noises across the bottom part of yesterday and on and off today. I pressed my hand across the bottom on both sides and do not feel any tenderness or pain. Nor is there any protruding I can feel with my hand. I worked out training my biceps and back and felt good for the most part, but when I did some back rows I noticed a tad bit of pain. I have had no major symptoms other than that and the unsettling/gurgling feeling going across the whole lower section of both sides (even though initially it was just the left side while in bed yesterday upon trying to sit up). What are you thoughts here? And thank you

Brief Answer:
It seems like Intestinal Colic.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Thanks for your question.
The initial symptom of locking up seems like a cramp which could be muscular or intestinal. If muscular it would arise from the muscles of the wall of the abdomen and if intestinal then most probably the intestines, could be large or small. The gurgling definitely refers to intestinal upset. For that I would need to know whether there was any associated nausea, vomiting or diarrhea or constipation. Did you pass stools before or after this episode. If yes, then what was the type of stool and colour. That would help us know what is wrong, if at all anything is. It is most likely Intestinal Colic which should be fine shortly but it would be better to know as to why it happened. Is there any burning in urine or any urinary complaints? Do let me know.
I will await your answer to know more in depth and guide you accordingly.

Hi,

There was no burning urine and my stools passed were the normal brown color today and yesterday I had diarrhea a few times. This was the first time that has happened where it felt like a locking up cramping feeling. I do not have any protrusion or bulging through the lower abdomen, but mostly just gurgling and unsettling feelings through the whole lower abdomen. Can it be both sides now when it was only initially only on the left?

Brief Answer:
There is no need to worry. The intestinal colic will resolve itself.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the answer.
It was Intestinal colic only. The fact that you had diarrhea suggests the same. As for left side or right. Inside, the abdomen is a continuous structure, there are no such compartments. The intestines are swimming in a little amount of fluid inside and the side does not matter. If there are intestinal cramps then they will be felt all over. If its lower abdomen then it is more likely to be due to large intestine and if it is in the middle abdomen then it is more likely to be due to small intestine.
If the diarrhea has stopped then probably the problem has passed and your body defenses have won over them and nothing needs to be done other than increasing your water and salt intake. If the diarrhea persists or comes back then you could take a course of Tab Norflox and Tinidazole twice a day for three days and Cap Spasmoproxyvon for the cramps. There is absolutely no need to worry on this issue.
Take care and do let me know if there are any queries.
