What Do Diarrhea And Presence Of Blood In Stool Followed By Constipation Indicate?

Take fiber and lactulose and avoid other laxatives, drink plenty
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM
I carefully read your question and tried to understand your concern.
If you had diarrhea and than passed blood with stools this might have been due to hemorrhoids, have you evey had this problem before. Blood with stools is not common with the usual viral infection of bowel but diarrhea can make hemorrhoids worse.
What I would recommend due to your difficulty to have a bowel movement is:
1. Take fiber supplement with your diet, take 1-2 doses a day
2. Take lactulose syrup 1-2 table spoon a day to help the stools be a bit looser and easier to pass (but not cause diarrhea, if too loose you have to reduce the dose)
3. Ibuprofen orally and local warm baths of the bottom might help with pain and muscle relaxation of the anal and rectal area. Drink plenty and be active.
4. If no improvement in 3-4 days or earlier if any worsening you will need to see a doctor.
5. I do not know what laxatives you have been using as you have not mentioned them by name above but be catious using some of them regularly (like senna or bisacodyl) as they might cause bowel dependance and make the bowel more lazy to work.
6. If you have not had a colonoscopy the last 5-10 years I would also recommend you to have one done- this should be after the symptoms with bowel problems improve a little. Blood test for anemia and stools for occult blood testing are few other tests that would be good.
7. Use local anal and rectal cream with steroids to reduce local irritation at the area and help you have easier bowel movement.
Hope this is helpful to you and answers to your question.
Kind Regards,
Dr Antoneta Zotaj
