Posted on Thu, 2 Mar 2017
Question: For 5 days I have had painful sores in my throat, headaches, a runny or stuffy nose, a cough, and a fever of 2 degrees above normal for me (99.6 compared to 97.6). I have used salt water gargles, Tylenol, cold & cough medicine, Mucinex, and warm showers. Is there anything else I can do to be more comfortable and get back to my life?

What is the safest OTC pain reliever I can take?

Brief Answer:
Tylenol is the safest option in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.
I can understand your concern.

The medicines which you are taking are all appropriate with correct dosage.
I can understand the concern of taking pain killer medicine in a suspected case of gastric ulcer.

Among the over the counter medication available,Tylenol(Acetaminophan) in the safest option, which you are already using.

Other medicines like Aspirin ,Ibuprofen, etc pose a risk in case of Gastric ulcer.

After taking the above medicines for around 5 days,if your symptoms are not improving, then it might be suggestive of a bacterial infection,in which case it would be advisable to start oral antibiotics like Cefixime.
You can also use Anesthetic oral gel like Lignocaine oral gel for throat pain relief.

Also do steam inhalation.Drink lots of fluids(warm).Avoid cold, very hot ,spicy and oily food.Warm turmeric milk will also help as turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties.

Hope this answers your question.I would be happy to answer if you have any follow-up questions.Take care.
