What Do Red Patches On The Cheeks Of An Infant Indicate?
Question: baby, boy, 8 months, Yellowknife , NWT , Canada...often has rosy cheeks after being in the cold,,,but the rosy patch on one cheek did not clear up, persists, and now has a harder feel than the other area. No evident fever as yet, and no echo of the patch inside the mouth but the localized texture is troubling and hard to explain unless it were an artifact of mild frostbite say.

Hi... I understand your concern.
This is Eczema.
The trick of the management is keeping the skin moist and never allowing it to be dry. For this oil massage and lotions like Oilatum will help.
Regarding cure options - eczema is a sort of allergy...allergies can only be controlled and can never be cured. But usually kids grow out of it...that is as the age progresses, they become better starting from 6 months.
Usually they will be completely better by 1.5 years of age.

I wonder if you kindly look at the picture I eventually was able to attach. The object seems too smooth for eczema perhaps. Turns out this is two days after they had the child out for a long walk. He came back with two red cheeks, only this one did not disappear--and thought you might want to think about it as a mild case of frostbite? He is also teething....

Hi.... I agree with you that it could be a mild frostbite, but, as it is not bothering the kid at all and so completely painless, this becomes less likely.
This is the reason why I put my first possibility as an eczema and not a frostbite.
But we can consider this as a second possibility as there is a history of exposure to cold environment and it is indurated underneath.
If there had been fever I would have even considered the possibility of cellulitis. But this is not a possibility.
If the indurated redness is still persisting even after 48 hours then you consult his Pediatrician or nearest emergency room.
