Brief Answer:
Normal Quadruple test report.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

The Quadruple test report is essentially normal. All the values are within normal limits. There is no risk of any developmental anomaly in the baby.

Your wife is slightly anemic and this is mostly a secondary feature of the increased blood volume during the second trimester. Low platelet count can be seen with some viral infections. This value has to be repeated to see if there is any change. Though this does not influence the growth of the baby, a normal count is necessary for an uneventful labor.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

As per quadruple marker report, Alpha Feto Protein is 27.42 ng/ml against reference range of 31-94 ng/ml....It is low, any issue.....I hv read that lower level of this protein may indicate the risk of down syndrome....PLSE CLARIFY...I ll be grateful...Regards.

Brief Answer:
Not to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

The AFP levels are within the safe zone. Though low levels may be associated with trisomies, isolated AFP levels are not the standard criterion to diagnose trisomies. The multiple marker screening test, which has already been done, is the best way.

Also, the MoM of more than or equal to 2.5 is considered to be the cut off for neural tube defects. Since your wife has MoM well below this value, there is no need to worry.

Since the Quadruple screening has given a no-risk result, the possibility of Down's syndrome can be safely excluded. Just follow up with regular sonograms and this would do.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please contact if you need any more help. I will be glad to do so.

regards,
Shanti.V.

Brief Answer:
Conservative approach with periodic monitoring.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing again.

Low platelet count in pregnancy without any associated symptoms can be encountered in 7-8 percent of cases. This is called 'Gestational Thrombocytopenia.'

As of now, the counts may have dropped as your wife has reached the mid trimester. The expanding blood volume at this stage causes hemodilution and gives spurious values. Counts below one lakh need to be considered seriously while observation with periodic monitoring is sufficient for the rest.

Family history can also be seen. The counts improve spontaneously 2- 12 weeks after delivery. There is no fetal or maternal harm.

You can also contact a hematologist for further appraisal of the situation.

Hope this helps. Please do contact if you need further information. I will be available to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
