Brief Answer:
Chinese herbal medicine, Not useful for overactive thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Goiterex is a Chinese herbal medicine. It contains many plants, seaweeds and tubers with medicinal value which is used in many conditions like thyroid swelling (goiter), skin infections, breast nodules, parotid nodules, testicular swelling etc.

It is NOT recommended for the treatment of over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism or Graves disease).

This is because one of its contents is a seaweed called Kombu which is rich in iodine. In over active thyroid we try to reduce the intake of iodine. So Goiterex is not recommended in over active thyroid.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome back. Noted your concerns.

The management of thyroid nodules depends on whether it is malignant ( cancerous) or benign (non cancerous).

All malignant nodules and large benign nodules which cause symptoms has to be surgically removed.

Non surgical options include

1. Medications- thyroxine and alternative medications
2. Radio frequency ablation
3. Iodine ablation
4. Alcohol/chemical ablation

Medications are useful only in under active or iodine deficiency nodules, which accounts for only a small number of thyroid nodules. So medications are not a recommendation for shrinking thyroid nodules.

If you are trying medications like thyroxine, Goiterex or iodium it's better to have an ultrasound done before medications and repeat it after 6 months. If there is no change in size, stop medications.

Goiterex the recommendations is to take 2 capsules thrice daily for 6 months.

If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you.
