What Is The Life Expectancy Of A Heart Patient With Artificial Heart Valve?
Question: HI. My 33 year old has had a human heart valve and now a mechanical valve. He had clasps put in his liver for anerysims that healed. He used steriods when he was younger. He developed endocarditus twice. he is on Methodone about 80 mg. daily for intractable pain, and warfarin. He states he read online that he only has about 15 years to live. I told him I would ask a cardiologist what a life expectency would be for anyone with this history.

For example, if it says that "30% of those with liver failure will die in one year", it means that 30 out of 100 individuals with such affliction will die in one year. The given individual is among 30 or 70 can not be predicted exactly. Hence it is not feasible to calculate exact life expectancy in a given case.
2. The life expectancy and problems during life of a patient will artificial heart valve depends upon many factors. Some of these are Status of other valves, Position at which valve is placed, pumping capacity of heart,current functional status, compliance to drug therapy,reasons for recurrent endocarditis etc. But it is not so that all individuals with an artificial valve will have curtailed or shortened life span.
