Duphaston is a hormone called Dydrogesterone (progesterone). This product is indicated in women trying to conceive if there is deficiency of the progesterone hormone (during luteal phase).

Once conception has taken place, progesterone hormone is indicated only in pregnancies due to assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or in cases of habitual abortion (repeated miscarriages).

Duphaston is also used for irregular cycles caused by progesterone deficiency. Combined with an estrogenic substance, Duphaston can be used in secondary amenorrhoea, dysfunctional uterine bleeding and post-menopausal complaints where endogenous progesterone deficiency is implicated. So, this drug can be safely used under the guidance of experienced doctor.

Misuse and overuse of progesterone can lead to a number of side effects including foetal death and spontaneous abortion (more so seen in the first three months of gestation), masculinisation of female foetus, birth defects in babies such as cleft palate and heart defects.

Therefore in the United States and some countries where the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulation is stricter have the banned the drug.
