Brief Answer:
I will say get evaluated first, then contraception if needed!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this heavy and very painful periods that you have reported. While contraception inmost cases will help in regulating menstrual flow and pain, I will suggest that we know exactly what has caused it before treating blindly. Contraception comes in after excluding all possible causes like fibroids, infection, endometrosis, etc.

For the above reasons I Will recommend the following:
1. Get evaluated by an OBGYN at your earliest convenience,
2. Take pain medications like Tylenol and Ibuprofen when in pains,
3. If no other cause is identified, contraception may be considered. At 37, we need to be very careful about choosing the type of pill you can take.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
