19 Year Old With Increased Heart Rate. Had Multiple Concussions. Is That The Reason?
Hi I'm a 19 year old girl I am very athletic I work out three hours everyday and do at least and hour of cardio. My heart rate used to be 62 but I received my fourth concussion in January this year and I still have symptoms. My heart rate at rest now is 112 and when I exercise it exceeds 200, just standing causes it to go to 135. Is this something I should be worried about? Do you think my concussion was a main cause?
It is quite abnormal for a young, helthy, athletic female like yourself to have an elevated resting heart rate like that; it is difficult for me to make a definite connection between a concussion and a persistent abnormal heart rate several weeks after the acute event, but I definitely recommend you to seek medical attention for further testing. Basic tests that likely would be ordered include a 12 lead resting EKG to see what you baseline heart rhythm is and perhaps a Holter monitor (portable EKG) to see how your heart behaves over a 24-48 hour period.
Hope this is useful, wish you the best health,
