My son is about 3 years old. He has a very poor appetite. He does not gain weight too. One of my doctors prescribed junior lanzol 15 mg when I reported to him of this. He would eat well if this medicine is given. I also started monitoring his weight when he was consuming jun lanzol. I could see a visible difference in weight gain. Can you pl explain, how this happens. What condition is my son going through. The minute I stop the medicine , can see appetite loss. Pl suggest

Hi thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.
One of the common causes of loss of appetite in a child is Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. It causes heart burn and esophagitis (inflammation of esophagus) due to acid regurgitation in to the esophagus. Your son may either be having gastritis or GERD . In case of GERD, a long term therapy is needed since the treatment is only symptomatic.
Lanzol is Lansoprazole a proton pump inhibitor. This drug prevents the the acid production. It can totally abolish the acid secretion that occurs in empty as well as full stomach. The action is marked and long lasting.
Lansoprazole inhibits the acid secretion permanently in the existing gastric cells. But when new cells are formed the secretion is resumed. So when you stop the drug, the acid secretion resumes and this results in loss of appetite. Avoid giving him spicy food. Honey has been proved to reduce the symptoms of gastritis.
