5 Month Kid, Watery Eye With Yellow Discharge, Faint Red Splotch Near Iris. What Could Be This?

My 5 month old daughter has had one eye watery with yellow discharge for 5-6 days. I assumed it was a clogged tear duct and have been using a clean, wet, warm wash cloth to clean her eye and massage the tear duct. I noticed today that she has a VERY faint red splotch right next to her iris (its maybe a half cm in size) is this cause for concern?

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Watery eye and mucopurulent (yellow) discharge in babies up to one year is often due to partially blocked nasolacrimal duct. This duct drains tears in to the nasal cavity or nose. When the eye lids close it creates a negative pressure that pushes the tears in to the duct. This partial block usually disappears by the end of one year in babies. Massaging the nasolacrimal duct in case of obstruction increases the hydrostatic pressure and helps in better drainage of tears.

The red spot may be subconjunctival hemorrhage ie., bleeding due to capillary damage. Probably, while massaging, you had applied too much pressure on the eyes and that would have resulted in the red spot. It is harmless and should disappear on its own. Most of the time it disappears within 7 to 21 days. Initially the colour changes to orange and then to yellow and finally it disappears.

You can wait for four to five days. If it does not become orange/yellow or if its size increases, then you should consult an ophthalmologist for further management.

I hope this is useful.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
From history it seems that she might be hhaving acute muco-purulant conjunctivitis.
As there is red spot near cornea, there is a chance of having foreign body in eye.
Put antibiotic drops every 1-2 hourly.
If there is no improvement then consult ophthalmologist and get examined.
Ok and bye.
