Dear User,
Thanks for your query. The history and description of symptoms in case of your six years old niece are highly suggestive of a variant of
Migraine. As a Pediatrician , I have seen and treated children with similar symptoms. There are different types of Migraine and headache may not be the presenting symptom in all the patients. Like in this case, there is an aura, dizziness/
vertigo and
vomiting. In addition to
MRI, an EEG should also be done just to rule out
Epilepsy as it may mimic an attack of non-classically presenting Migraine.
A complete eye checkup by an ophthalmologist is also recommended. I suggest, you
consult a Pediatrician who will prescribe two types of medications: One to prevent such attacks and secondly medicines to be taken during an attack which are pain killers like paracetamol/
brufen and anti-emetics for vomiting.
You need not be much worried as most of the kids outgrow such attacks as they grow older. In many cases there is a history of Migraine attacks in siblings or parents especially the mother.
In addition to medicines , the child should be dissuaded to eat chocolates, pizza, noodles and other fast foods. If she drinks coffee or caffeine containing drinks like coke etc. she should stop consuming these because they are known to trigger such attacks.
Good luck friend and wish your niece a complete recovery.
