Am I Immune To Bactrim If Acne Does Not Clear After Taking It?
I was taking bactrim ds about a year ago for my acne and it cleared up my face very well. I stopped taking it about 6-7 months ago. My face breaks out more often now and usually always has some acne on it rather than with bactrim ds. My dermatologist put me back on bacterium ds two weeks ago and I have still have seen no improvement. When I took it a year ago my face was totally clear within two weeks. Am I immune to this drug now?
Bactrim is a very effective drug for inflammatory nodulocystic acne because it is lipophilic and rapidly attains the desired levels in the sebum but because it can be associated with serious side effects like Bone Marrow Suppression and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis so it it is not recommended to be used for more than 2-3 weeks. Repeated courses can induce resistance to it in Propionibacterium acnes (the acne responsible bacteria) but it has not been measured. I rarely use Bactrim in acne because of the serious side effects it can cause.
In my practice i mostly prefer either Azithromycin OR Doxycycline OR Isotretnoin for inflammatory/severe acne.
Topical treatment is a valuable adjunct to oral treatment: Day time appliaction of clindamycin gel and night time application of Benzoyl peroxide gel works very well in my patients of acne.
take care regards
