Ankles Swollen. Had Acupuncture. What Is The Cause? Is It Kidney Or Heart Related?

My ankles are very swollen, otherwise I am healthy. No bloodpressure. I have tried tablets (water) they did not agree with me and did not work very well in taking down the swelling. I got acupunacture which worked for a few months but lately the problem has got worse. My doctor said that the problem could be kidney or heart but to date I have not been tested to see what is causing this problem..Cold it be varicose veins? Thank you.

Hi sheila,

Yes the common causes of swelling of feet are heart or kidney dysfunction. The entire clinical picture is taken into consideration like age of patient and associated symptoms in order to diagnose.

Yes varicose veins as well can cause swelling of feet but it is usually accompanied by fatigue or discomfort that gets worse as the day progresses or after standing for long, and it can often be relieved by elevating the legs. Some people can also have itching of skin or cramping in the legs, or cramping after long periods of standing. These symptoms can occur with or without the presence of visible veins on legs.

A venous doppler can be done to rule it out, on advice by your doctor after examination.

Wishing you best of health,
Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao
