Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist, Sonia Dhawan's Response
Hi,
There is an appropriate stage of knee arthritis which needs surgery, before that generally can be avoided but after that stage the surgery doesn't yield good results. The stage can be determined by the issues your mother is facing and the stage her knee X-ray depicts. As you mentioned swelling, it might suggest that the muscles are getting weak, so surgery might be a better choice, however, it is difficult to say that for sure until the X-ray says the same.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
