Back Pain. MRI Showed Nerve Roots Compression At Disc Level, Hypertropic Degenerative Changes In Vertebrae. Meaning?
My dad has been suffering from back pain for thee last 1 year , recently we went in for an mri scan and the doctor diagnosed the following. Grade 1 of anterolisthesis of l4 on l5 with bilateral pars defects. Marrow signal intensity is normal. Hypertropic degenerative changes in the vertebrae with osteophyte prominence and in the facet joints. l3/l4 disc is diffusely bulged . The bulged disc coupled with hypertrophied articular facets have caused bilateral neural foraminal compromise with exciting nerve roots compression at this disc level. l4/l5 disc is diffusely bulged . The bulged disc in conjunction with bilateral hypertrophied articular facets and thickened ligamentum flavum have caused canal and bilateral neural foraminal stensosis with exiting nerve rootws compression at this disc level . Mild diffuse bulge is seen in the l5/s1 disc. No significant bulge or herniation is seen in the remaining discs. Paraspinal Soft Tissue structures are nomal. Impression-Bilateral neural foraminal compromise with exciting nerve roots compression at l3/l4 disc level .Canal and bilateral neural foraminal stenosis with exciting nerve roots compression at l4/l5 level.
hi...It means due to wear and tear effect, our spine-cervical/lumbar are prone to develop abnormal biomechanics and weight bearing mechanism. normally intervertebral disk acts as a shock absorber during weight loading..as part of ageing, the intervertebral disk loses its jelly like consistency and its height collapses...this leads to more work on other parts of spine namely facets..so they become large in size....eventually they restrict the space for the nerve roots which are coming out from the spinal cord and lead to decreased blood supply to the spinal cord and nerves causing pain..also they will cause the spine to move forwards causing further nerve root compression and pain.. your father requires surgery- posterior lumbar decompression and fusion with pedicel-screw system...
