Broken Wrist Joint. Have Pain. No Relief With Painkiller. Need For Worry
Hello Doctor, I have broken my right hand wrist joint 1 month ago. Plaster will be removed on 1st week in April according to doctor s suggestion. But since last two days I have been suffering from severe pain. Pain killer is also not working that much. My question is this is something serious to worried about ?? or its natural in case of broken hand ?? Thanks, Nusrat.
HI Nusrat,
Welcome to HCM.
Pain is often experienced during fracture healing. Healing of fracture wrist bone might take long time due to relatively less blood supply to these bones.
But you have mentioned that you have been suffering from severe pain for the past 2 days. Severe and acute onset of pain one month after fracture could be due to infection or too tight a plaster or could be due to Avascular necrosis of bone ( which could be a probable cause in your case) or due to pressure on nerves or could be due to vascular obstruction.
In case if you have numbness or your hands are pale or swollen then vascular obstruction should be suspected. In case if you have weakness and numbness then nerve compression should be suspected.
I dont mean to scare you off but wanted to give you some information.
Try using Tramadol. In case that does not work and you have any symptoms mentioned above, please get an x ray done and see your doctor immediately to rule out any vascular or neural compression or avascular necrosis and get treated accordingly.
Hope you got the information you were looking for.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query,
It might take eight weeks or longer for your wrist to heal. More severe breaks may not fully mend for six months. You and your doctor will decide when you are fully recovered.
See your doctor if the pain or swelling keeps getting worse after you get a cast or if you experience numbness in your fingers.
get an x-ray done to see the stage of healing
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful
