Bruising On Both Sides Of Ankle With Swelling, Pins And Needles In Big Toe With Heavy Foot, Pain While Walking. Diagnosed Sprained Ankle. Suggest

Hello
I got an injury last saturdau and was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. The bruising has become worse and is on both side of my ankle however the pain is only on the right side of my ankle. I also now have pins and needles in my big toe and a feeling of heavyness in my foot. It feels painful to walk on and I still have some swelling on the right side. As well as constant pain. It also hurts to touch. Can you shed some light on the pins and needles and if you think i need to get another check.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,

Sprain of ankle takes nearly 3 weeks to settle down.
In a way it is worse than a fracture as you never give proper rest to your foot. Pins and needle sensation is due to pressure over superficial nerve fibre due to swelling or injury. This will resolve with the time.
Take some anti inflammatory like ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day for 5 to 7 days.
Apply crepe bandage.

I request you to consult your doctor who after examination may order a X ray if required. If no bony injury is detected he may give you analgesics and rest advise if required.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Depending on the severity of sprain, it may take around 3-4 weeks of immobilization of the ankle for proper healing. This process of healing proceeds naturally and there are no specific medicines to enhance the healing.

The general treatment guidelines for ankle sprain are as follows -

* Protection -in the form of a splint or support
* Rest to the injured part and avoiding activities which causes additional strain
* Elevation of the foot to resolve the swelling and active toe movements
* Ice packing of the affected area to alleviate the pain
* Elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* analgesic antiinflammatory medications as needed.

Pins and needle sensation may be due to the injury as such causing nerve concussion (which usually recovers spontaneously) or due to the pressure developed by the hematoma causing nerve compression.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
