CAT Showed Severe Bruising On Back, Has Air Bubble In Rib. Is The Surgery Major?

My sister had a terrible fall backwards out of a tub. She had a cat scan and it only showed severe bruising. That was 3 weeks ago and she is in severe pain, worse than when it happened. She went to the doctor today and was told that cat scan doesn t show broken rib right away. She was also told that she has an air bubble near her left rib. She was also told that she would need surgery if the air bubble got bigger and didn t go away. She is having another cat scan tomorrow. Is the surgery serious and what does it involve?

Hello and welcome to HCM
Yes if the air bubble below the rib increases than surely she needs an emergency surgery. As it is not clearly written by you whether air is present under Diaphragm or in chest. If it is under diaphragm than it indicates perforation of intestine otherwise it is a chest injury which include lungs.
In both the cases If it does not resolve needs surgery.
