Can Elemental Calcium Have A Negative Effect?

I am hypothyroid and I take syntroid in the morning. Even though I am taking elemental calcium with D3 before bed. (helps me sleep) it is affecting my thyroid. It feels as if my syntroid isn t working, I am feeling fatigued and my body aches. The only change I made reservations ently was from a 600 calcium carbonate/800iu D3 to 650 elemental calcium/d3 400iu. I felt fine until this new change in calcium. Is it possible that the elemental calcium has a negative affect regarding syntroid abortion even though taken many hrs apart?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Calcium affects the absorption of levothyroxine only if taken together. Since you have taken these drugs with time gap so that is not the case for you. My advice is to get your calcium and thyroid blood levels checked. Maybe the dose of syntroid is less, the reason for not working of your treatment. Don't worry, you are fine. Just consult your family doctor after doing these investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhil Agrawal
