Can I Go For A Surgery For Slipped Discs While Suffering From Cauda Equina Syndrome?
I have a condition called cauda equina syndrome. I have had 2 operations already as an emergency for slipped discs. I have now got another 2 slipped discs and my surgeon has told me I have a crumbling spine so nothing can be done until my discs slip further then they will have to operate. How will I know when they have slipped completely? also How many discs are goin to slip and do you think I will end up in a wheelchair.

Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query.Lumbar disc herniations can cause nerve impingement syndromes like L5 or S1 or cauda equina syndrome or combination of them. The bulging discs will cause compression on nerve which causes all these symptoms. If the the degree of bulging is more or symptoms not recovering by conservative options like physiotherapy and neurotropic drugs then surgery is the option. In some cases a recurrent disc herniation occurs usually within 3 months of surgery. Microdiscectomy is the usual surgery done for disc bulge now,but if multiple recurrence is there then lumbar fusion surgery is advised. Cauda equina syndrome will recover slowly after surgery with rehabilitation measures. For some it takes 1 year others 2-3 years.Hope this may help you. Let me know if you have any further query.
