Hello, Welcome to HCM, Herpes infection of the eye is called as Herpes zoster ophthalmicus, this will occurs when the varicella-zoster virus is reactivated in the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. Patients with herpes zoster ophthalmicus are treated with oral acyclovir for seven to 10 days. Alleviation of pain with oral acyclovir during the initial stages of the disease, may have a favorable effect on postherpetic neuralgia. Steroids help to reduce swelling (inflammation). A short course of steroid tablets may be considered in addition to antiviral medication. This may help to reduce pain and speed healing of the rash. But the steroid will not cause the depression, it may be due to postherpetic neuralgia. The pain caused by herpes zoster ophthalmicus will be severe and patients will go for depression because of intolerable pain. Thank you.
