Can A Bartholin Cyst Cause Miscarriage?

I have had bartholin cysts for the past 6 years i.e. since I was 22 years old. I have had the right cyst drained 4 times through I&D and had the left gland removed in 2008. The last cyst I had was 2 weeks ago when I was 6 weeks pregnant and since 2 weeks of antibiotics did not help, I had to go in for an I&D again. The next scan showed that I had a blighted ovum and i began to mis-carry. A week later, the cyst returned and it had to be drained again. I feel frustrated because of the cyst and was wonderign if it could be one of the reasons for the miscarriage. Also, what do I do to prevent the cyst from coming again... I wish the right gland could also be removed but my doc says that the gland cannot be removed till the cyst become inflammed ( and not infected) . Please let me know of the options I have for dealing with the recurrent problem and avoiding it in future

Hi,

I can understand your concerns.

Bartholin cyst is not directly related to miscarriage or blighted ovum.

However if you have been taking antibiotics for it or had stress due to surgery or anesthesia for its treatment then that might cause miscarriage.

The commonest cause of bartholins cyst recurring is diabetes or any other immuno-compromised state.

Do you have diabetes or any other disease?

Also do you maintain good hygiene in your genital area ?

Treatment for the recurrent problem is to find the cause of recurrence and not just treat the cyst every time it occurs.

I will advise you to get your sugars checked.

Also keep the genital area clean and dry at all times and wear preferably cotton under wears.
