Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I used clavam 625 as a treatment against thypoid. I am using microgynon 20 as birth control, my doctor said it might not have effect on the birth control pills, however I got a small bleeding today. Might it be because of taking clavam and microgynon?
It is not safe to take clavam and microgynon together. The antibiotic clavam can reduce the efficacy of contraceptive pill microgynon-20 and thus it may increase the risk of pregnancy. It may result in breakthrough bleeding which you seem to have developed. You should use an alternate or additional method of contraception such as condom/diaphragm during or after treatment with clavam.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
